Job satisfaction part 2
Satisfy your curiosity on accountant job satisfaction
A follow up on job satisfaction
In our last newsletter we looked at job satisfaction based on firm size and looked to see which firms had the most satisfied employees - now we’re back and looking at job satisfaction across different streams and between job titles at the firm.
Before we get to the content, we’ve got a returning sponsor who’s here to help sort out your crypto tax nightmare (or that of all your friends who keep asking you for help)
Never fear, CryptoTaxCalculator is here!

Now to continue our view into accountant job satisfaction
The first area I looked at is which service line had the highest degree of employee satisfaction overall on a scale form 1 to 10. When I chose to go into tax initially, it was a total shot in the dark - I had no data on where people were happiest. Well we now have the data, and here’s where we ended up:
Financial Advisory with an average satisfaction of 7.11
Consulting with 7.07
Industry with 6.95
Tax with 6.73
Audit with 6.49
“It’ll get better, this is an investment in yourself”
In my accounting firm journey, I was told “it gets better” countless times. It was always this non-specific promise of better days ahead in public accounting and it would all be worth it. But when? With nearly 1,500 responses since adding the job satisfaction field to the website, we can now see the curve of job satisfaction as people progress through the levels at their accounting firm.
The good news: It does indeed seem to get better!
The bad news: Once the youthful exuberance of being an intern wears off, job satisfaction is pretty steady and sits below that 7 out of 10 rating until you reach the Director level. Here are the averages:
The partner level was excluded due to the small sample size, but there was a pretty big split between very high and very low scores.
We’re coming up on 10,000 valid submissions on Big 4 Transparency, and I need your help to get there!
Why does getting to 10,000 matter? Well to be honest with you it doesn’t but it’s a pretty cool accomplishment. Not just for me but for the community as a whole who have been a part of this. Together we’ve made a meaningful difference for many people seeking quality information on what their skillset is worth and how they want to plan their careers or set their expectations around comp meeting time.
Now I have one ask for you. If you got value out of this website or the newsletter, my ask is that you share it with a friend, coworker or classmate. Word of mouth is really the key for spreading this thing around, and the more people who use this resource the better the quality of the information.
Thank you,
Dom
