I can’t get no satisfaction

The Rolling Stones said it best, it’s hard to find job satisfaction in your career. That’s why this edition of the newsletter is all about the most recently added field to our data set - employee reported job satisfaction.

Before we jump into the content, we’ve got a little holiday gift for you from our sponsor!

’Tis the season… To get your CPD/CPE hours in!If you’re a CPA, you know how much trouble it is to stay on top of your CPD/CPE. That’s why I’m excited to share this newsletter’s sponsor: LumiQ! I have personally been using them for over a year now to meet my CPD/CPE requirements, and I've benefited greatly by how easy they make it to stay on top of your requirements.LumiQ has podcasts with interesting topics and guests like the CFOs of TD, Slack, and Yelp, that are all pre-approved to count toward your CPD/CPE hours. The platform also tracks your requirements and how you’re progressing to make filing your report a breeze.

As a promotion to our readers, LumiQ is offering 5 free hours/credits of CPD/CPE for you to try it out! The best part is that many employers are willing to cover the cost for employees to help you meet your requirements. Check them out here and see how much more enjoyable CPD/CPE can be!

Now to see what the data is telling us about accountant job satisfaction

Overall, the average rating on current job satisfaction was 6.84 out of 10, and has been trending steadily upward over the last 3 months. In October, the average rating was 6.60. in November it was 6.99 and in December it is 7.04 so far. Whether this is an impact of a worsening economic outlook giving people a more positive perception of their job, or influenced by people taking more time off and feeling refreshed around the holidays is unclear, but it will be interesting to see if there are clear seasonal trends to job satisfaction as we continue to collect data on this.

If we take a look at the job satisfaction ranking of the 9 firms with the greatest number of responses, we get the following ranking of job satisfaction, from highest to lowest:

  1. RSM: 7.52

  2. Moss Adams: 7.36

  3. BDO: 7.33

  4. Baker Tilly: 7.2

  5. Grant Thornton: 6.95

  6. Deloitte: 6.94

  7. EY: 6.90

  8. KPMG: 6.58

  9. PwC: 6.44

After seeing these rankings, there seemed to be a pattern emerging of greater reported job satisfaction at large firms outside of the Big 4, so I did a break down of job satisfaction by firm size. The categories used were Big 4, Other Top 20 firms, and Other smaller firms - categorizations can be viewed here. Here were the findings:

  1. Other top 20 firms had the highest average reported job satisfaction, with 7.18

  2. Other smaller firms had the second highest average reported job satisfaction by a slim margin, with 6.81

  3. Big 4 firms had the lowest average reported job satisfaction with 6.72 as the average reported satisfaction level
